Linux Xen VPS Hosting
What is Xen Hosting?
Xen is a highly segregated virtual private server (VPS) hosting environment. One customer's account cannot touch or impact the CPU processing and memory limits allocated to the other accounts on the same Xen VPS server. This is why Xen and dedicated hosting environments are quite similar. Xen VPS hosting takes system stability to the next level because accounts do not contend with each other for available memory and CPU processing.
Xen customers will always know the exact amount of resources available to their account. This is in contrast to OpenVZ VPS Hosting, our other VPS hosting environment that utilizes burstable memory. Learn more about the difference between Xen and OpenVZ.
Xen Hosting's Swap Space
The Xen host environment utilizes what is called swap space. If a Xen account begins to run out of memory, any inactive processes are pushed to this allotted disk space. The swap space isn't intended to be additional account space. Rather it is an area used to temporarily house inactive processes to reduce the memory load and free up space whenever necessary. Swap space can be a great tool, but an account will experience a performance penalty when using it.
Xen Hosting's Account Management
Xen hosting accounts are managed by default with the HyperVM control panel as well as the fully configured, user-friendly LxAdmin control panel. While HyperVM is used for overall account administration, webmasters will use LxAdmin for daily operations. LxAdmin includes a module called InstallApp that is used to auto-install a wide variety of applications like blogs, CMS and forums.
Xen Hosting & Power Users
Xen is the ideal VPS environment for seasoned webmasters who require a flexible VPS platform with high levels of control and customization capability. Xen is a wonderful VPS environment, but it isn't intended for every webmaster. Xen customers have complete access to iptables for firewall security and are able work with its customizable kernel. A2 Hosting recommends that Xen customers with high memory and CPU usage requirements consider the larger VPS packages that we offer like the Power VPS or Pinnacle VPS. This will prevent persistent performance penalties from heavy use of the swap space.
A2 Hosting recommends OpenVZ VPS Hosting as a VPS environment alternative for non-power users.
